International Medical University (IMU)

The International Medical University was established in 1992 as the International Medical College, or IMC, Malaysia's first private medical college. It attained university status in 1999 and has remained true to key elements of the IMC vision, which are to widen access to professional healthcare education, and to use innovative, integrated and student-centred means in providing that education.

This vision required strong links to be forged, from the outset, with reputable Partner Medical Schools committed to excellence and who share our educational philosophy. It was our progressive, systems-based, integrated medical curriculum that first caught the imagination of our Partner Medical Schools, and today we collaborate with Medical Schools in Australasia, North America, Ireland, the United Kingdom and China.

IMU's main campus is located in Bukit Jalil and its clinical schools are in Seremban, Batu Pahat and Kuala Pilah. The university prides itself of its state-of-the-art facilities which are extensive and are equipped with latest technology which is constantly upgraded. IMU's pure medical courses are highly sought-after. In recent years, the courses offered has evolved to meet Malaysia's growing need for healthcare staff in multiple disciplines.

The IMU now offers undergraduate programmes in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, pharmaceutical chemistry, nursing, nursing science, medical biotechnology, nutrition and dietetics, psychology, biomedical science as well as postgraduate programmes by research in the fields of Medical Sciences and Community Health.

In 2010, IMU saw the first intake of students for the chiropractic programme, which is the first and only complete chiropractic educational programme in Malaysia, as well as in all of Southeast Asia. In February 2011, the IMU offered the Chinese Medicine programme, the first such programme launched in a medical school. The programme will focus on combining medical education and scientific research, offering the full array of medical course in both Chinese Medicine and Western.

All programmes are government-accredited; the MBBS degree is recognised by the Malaysian Medical Council and the pharmacy degree by the Malaysian Pharmacy Board.

IMU has more than 4500 students and that number is steadily growing. Most students are from Malaysia and the international students hail from Singapore, Japan, India, Sri Lanka, Mauritius, South Korea, Maldives, Australia, Canada and Egypt.

There are more than 200 highly-qualified and experienced teaching staff from Australia, the United States, Europe, Japan, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and many more. Most of them are involved in supervising undergraduate and postgraduate research and dissertations, conduct workshops and actively involved in their own research.

So far, more than 1600 students have graduated with degrees in postgraduate studies, medical, pharmacy and nursing degrees. More than 1800 students have graduated from its partner universities overseas.

The university aims to be at the forefront of development in the field of medical education and its undergraduate programme will be linked to the evolving postgraduate training and Continuing Medical Education programmes in Malaysia.

IMU adopts innovative and integrated medical curriculum and have excellent training facilities at its Bukit Jalil campus and the Clinical Schools. Students can choose to transfer to any of IMU's 30 partner universities in the world.

IMU also offers financial assistance such as the IMU Medical Scholarships, Nursing Scholarships, High Achiever Awards, Merit Awards and National Higher Education Fund study loans.

In 2009, the IMU was ranked as Tier Five : Excellent status in the Rating System for Malaysian Higher Education 2009 (SETARA). The highest is Tier 6. It is an exercise carried out by the Ministry of Higher Education to measure the quality and prestige of universities and university colleges in Malaysia.

At IMU, students enjoy state-of-the-art facilities including the Learning Resource Centre which combines the resources of the library, the e-learning portal and the medical museum. The university is actively pursuing the development of educational innovation in both areas.

Key areas of research include bioactive molecules, building-related illnesses, molecular carcinogenesis, pharmacogenomics and pharmaceutics, environmental health, clinical research and medical education. IMU recognises that student life is not just about learning. Its Bukit Jalil campus in Kuala Lumpur is equipped with a gymnasium, student lounge, dance floor and a café for relaxation and to encourage student interaction.
